2026 Steel Export Packaging Guide: Compliance, Best Practices & Category-Specific Standards

Release time:

2026-01-27

For steel exporters, proper packaging is more than just product protection—it’s a critical link in ensuring on-time delivery, complying with international regulations, and maintaining customer trust. Poor packaging can lead to costly damage (such as galvanized layer peeling, steel plate scratching, or coil deformation), customs delays due to non-compliant marking, or even cargo rejection by overseas customers, especially amid evolving global trade rules and stricter import inspections. This guide integrates the latest 2026 trade regulations, ASTM A700 packaging standards, and frontline industry best practices, covering common steel categories and mainstream export destinations, to help you optimize packaging solutions, reduce logistics risks, and enhance overall supply chain efficiency.

General Packaging Requirements & Compliance Standards

1. Marking & Labeling (Mandatory for Customs Clearance)

All packages must have durable, waterproof bilingual (English + destination language if required) shipping marks, including: product name, specification (thickness, width, length), material grade (e.g., Q235B, 304 stainless steel), gross/net weight (accurate to 0.1kg), contract number, port of destination, country of origin (e.g., Made in China), and package/coil number (serial number for traceability). For hazardous goods (e.g., pickled steel, oiled steel coils), affix UN-approved dangerous goods labels and safety data sheets (SDS) as required. It is recommended to add QR codes or barcodes linked to product information and shipping documents for easy tracking by logistics companies and customers, which significantly improves logistics efficiency and reduces information confirmation costs. Marks should be affixed to two opposite sides of the package to ensure visibility during inspection.

2. Strapping & Load-Bearing Requirements

Use high-tensile galvanized steel straps (tensile strength ≥1500N/mm²) or PET strapping (safer, rust-free alternative, suitable for stainless steel and high-precision steel) instead of ordinary iron wire, which is prone to rusting and breaking under humidity. Strap spacing should not exceed 50cm, and corner protectors (plastic or metal) must be installed at edges to prevent strapping from cutting into the steel surface or damaging coatings (e.g., galvanized layers, color-coated layers). The weight of a single package must be compatible with container and handling equipment capacities: ≤2 tons for 20ft containers and ≤3 tons for 40ft containers. For heavy steel sections, additional cross strapping should be added to enhance stability. This ensures safe loading/unloading by forklifts or cranes and avoids overloading risks during transportation, which may lead to container damage or safety accidents.

Operation Trend and Post-Holiday Outlook of the Steel Market Around the 2026 Spring Festival

Due to factors such as the lack of prominent contradictions in the steel industry, capital mostly flowing to varieties with restricted supply or incremental demand, sluggish speculative demand, and weak expectations, steel prices fluctuated slightly before the Spring Festival. Looking ahead to after the festival, the steel market still faces certain pressure. It is expected that the accumulation of steel inventories will be slightly lower than the same period last year, but weak market expectations and sluggish speculative demand will suppress prices. In addition, the supply of raw materials is loose, and ironmaking output is expected to recover slowly, leading to weakened cost support. However, market liquidity is abundant, and the country has continuously introduced steady growth policies, including support for real estate, infrastructure investment, and manufacturing. The market has strong expectations for the implementation of these policies, which will provide certain support for steel prices.
