This article interprets the professional explanation about the official standards of high‑strength steel used in expressway guardrails. It covers key mechanical indexes including yield strength, tensile strength, elongation after fracture and yield ratio, and clarifies the applicable conditions of high‑strength steel guardrails on 120 km/h expressways.

Traffic guardrail knowledge

What is high-strength steel? High-strength means a yield strength of 700Mpa and a tensile strength of 750Mpa, that is, the tensile strength reaches 750Mpa, and the elongation after fracture reaches ±20%.

The national standard for elongation after fracture in the production process of high-strength steel is 12%. Since high-strength steel guardrails have the performance and function of protecting against impact and ensuring safety on expressways, their elongation after fracture should be higher.

In the process of domestic use and R&D of high-strength steel, the most difficult thing to achieve is the elongation after fracture. In fact, since we started developing this product in 2018, the hardest thing to reach and achieve has been this index. There is also the yield ratio, which is relatively easier to control.

Now we can completely achieve the yield ratio between 18-20. However, only the guardrail plates pressed from 3mm thick steel plates by those recognized steel mills can be fully used on expressways with a design speed of 120km/h. Only such guardrail plates can be called high-strength steel guardrails.
